Chemicals, such as alcohol or other disinfectants, can also serve to sanitize the area, killing bacteria, viruses, and pathogens that might otherwise compromise the integrity of the sample.

In contrast, while boiling water can be effective for some surfaces, it is typically impractical for disinfecting sampling points in many cases, as it may not reach all surfaces uniformly. Chlorine tablets might not adequately disinfect non-water surfaces or may leave residuals that could affect the sample.
